What methylation actually is
Methylation is a real biochemical process doing real work in your body. It is also the subject of one of the most overinterpreted tests in wellness medicine.
Both things are true, and the useful version of this page is the one that separates them: which parts of this panel are actionable, and which parts get read as far more meaningful than they are.
Methylation is a chemical reaction — attaching a small carbon-and-hydrogen group to a molecule — that happens billions of times a second across your body. It is involved in DNA maintenance, neurotransmitter handling, and clearing a compound called homocysteine.
The pathway depends on B-vitamin cofactors, principally folate, B12 and B6. If those run short, the pathway runs less efficiently.

About MTHFR specifically
This deserves its own section, because it is what most people are actually searching for.
MTHFR variants are common — a large share of the population carries one. Being common is a strong hint that carrying one is usually not a medical problem.
What a variant can do is modestly affect how efficiently the enzyme works. What it usually does not do is cause the long list of conditions attributed to it across the internet.
The practical test is simple: what does your homocysteine say? If your homocysteine is normal, the pathway is doing its job regardless of what your genotype looks like, and a variant result changes very little. If homocysteine is elevated, that is worth addressing — and it is worth addressing whether or not you carry a variant.
In other words, the measurable outcome matters more than the genetic predisposition. A result is not a diagnosis, and it is not a prescription for a supplement protocol.
If a provider hands you an MTHFR result and a supplement list in the same breath, that is a reason for caution rather than confidence.

Reasons that do not: curiosity about your genetics, or having read that MTHFR explains a symptom. Start with the comprehensive panel instead — it is less expensive and answers more.

An honest word on the evidence
Homocysteine and B-vitamin status are established markers; the broader clinical value of methylation testing is still debated and results inform rather than dictate a plan. Results vary. One nuance worth knowing, because it is rarely mentioned: lowering homocysteine with B vitamins reliably lowers homocysteine. Whether that translates into better cardiovascular outcomes is less clear than the marker's association with risk would suggest — trials have been mixed. That does not make homocysteine useless; it is a genuine signal and often points at something correctable. It does mean treating the number as a goal in itself is getting ahead of the evidence.
